John’s Bikes Sponsors the Bath Literature Festival – a first!

Posted on 28 February 2011 in NEWS

John's Bikes broke new ground by being the first bike shop in Bath to sponsor an event at the Bath LitFest - William Fotheringham's "It's all about the Bike" on Sunday, 27th February at the Bath Masonic Hall.

What a fabulous morning...  Set in this amazing venue, Will Fotheringham spoke about his new essential reference guide "Cyclopedia: It's All About the Bike".   Will is passionate about cycling. When he's not cycling himself, he writes about it for The Guardian: the gear, the races, the faces, the places, the scandals, the sex and the drugs. William has collected a mountain of facts and interesting snippets in ‘Cyclopedia' and explained how his ideas grew to become the reference book that it is.    Edition 2 now in planning stage!  Will then spent loads of time answering many questions in his very relaxed, knowledgeable and informative way which delighted the audience. And the winner is....

    Johns Bikes Bath Lit 2011

And to coincide with the BathLit Fest event, John Potter created his very own OSCARS for a short story competition - under 50 words to contain the words bath and bike.  And the winners are:

Over 18s:  Colin French from Warminster with his story : "Orange Chain":

Orange chain, muddy rims remind me of the last ride, the start of another adventure. A look at the oil-can on the shelf makes it possible again. The oil-can is a friend to the bike like the bath to the rider.

Under 18s:  Violet Wilshire from Bristol with her story: "Oi, get off my bike!".

Little blackbird rode her favourite bike in the forest.  Two snails called Pinkie and Bob came down a tree and jumped on the handlebars.  This made the blackbird fall right on top of a magical Bath pig.  The pig sneezed,  snails flew off, the blackbird went home for a bath.

Under 18s runner up:  Leo McCurdie from a village outside Bath with his story: "Bristol to Bath".

Once upon a bike I was on Clifton Suspension Bridge ready to start my biggest ride ever!! Bristol to Bath.
Oh no, what's going to happen?  Is Dad mad?
    Here I go.  Bye!

Puff, puff, pedal, pedal.   I can see Bath.  Yes, nearly there.  Done it!

All of us here at John's Bikes are hugely grateful to everyone who took part and made this all such fun.   In fact, so much fun that John decided he wanted to offer another prize in another competition, so check it out and get your entries in by July. www.johnsbikes.co.uk/competition

John’s Bikes Sponsors the Bath Literature Festival

John's Bikes break new ground by being the first bike shop in Bath to sponsor an event at the Bath LitFest.  They are sponsoring William Fotheringham for his talk "It's all about the Bike" on Sunday, 27th February at the Bath Masonic Hall in Orchard Street starting at 11.15am.

William Fotheringham is passionate about cycling. When he's not cycling himself, he writes about it for The Guardian: the gear, the races, the faces, the places, the scandals, the sex and the drugs. William has collected all the facts and interesting snippets in his essential reference guide Cyclopedia: It's All About the Bike.

We’ve known William for the past 30 years and are delighted to be sponsoring him as part of the LitFest”, says owner, John Potter.  "Some of you will have seen William in November at our Christmas Cracker Event in the shop or more recently as part of the BBC's documentary about Tommy Simpson.  So do postpone your bike ride on 27th February until after William's talk and come and join us".
